Nerd News | Mass Effect: Andromeda trailer

Tuesday, June 16

I didn't play video games growing up. In part because my parents never bought me a console*, and in part because I really wasn't all that interested. Even in college, when I had more access to video games in the dorms, I played on occasion, but nothing really held my attention for long. When the Mister and I moved in together, we eventually accumulated both an XBox 360 and a PS3. Even then, nothing really spoke to me.

Until, that is, I found Mass Effect. And Mass Effect 2. And Mass Effect 3.

The Mass Effect series is the first series I've ever beaten, and it holds a special place in my heart. (The main spaceship from the series, the Normandy, is even featured in my tattoo.) Therefore, the ending of Mass Effect 3 was bittersweet—and no, I'm not referring to the discontent with the actual content of the ending—I wanted to be able to continue playing in the ME 'verse forever.

When I heard that there would be another game released "at some point," I immediately got excited. And that game was officially announced yesterday at E3:

I'm so excited. I just hope the game continues to be as awesome as the others, and gives me another opportunity to play a kickass female character like Commander Shepard**.

*No, they weren't the worst parents ever. Just particular about my entertainment, I suppose.
**Sure, Commander Shepard could also be a dude, but I never played the character as one, so I think of her as a female.

  1. I have never played Mass Effect .____. But am hoping to remedy that ASAP. Which may or may not be why I'm playing through as many unfinished games I have this week like a madman.

  2. While I played the usual console games, my first love was the games put out by Sierra On-line. I'd write more, but it really deserves a blog post all its own.

  3. That's OK! I haven't played a lot of other games (obviously). Just know that it's super good. The first one can take a bit of getting used to, at least the side missions can be frustrating, but it's worth it to push through. :)

  4. LOOOOOVE the Mass Effects! I'm curious - what are your thoughts on the original ending?? I know all of internet land was up in arms about it, but I actually thought it was really great, and well suiting. This E3 has pretty much solidified our buying a PS4. Slightly ironic as I just had a post about how I don't identify as a gamer all that much anymore....perhaps in the next few years that will change!

  5. I didn't mind it at all. I'm not entirely sure I liked it, but I think it fit the series well, you're right.

I've never really identified as a gamer, but I enjoy the occasional game. I think it's OK to just jump back in when you feel like it. :)

  6. I couldn't agree with you more Mandy! Mass Effect is my all-time FAVORITE game. I have been playing games since I was a little girl in the 80s. My abridged gamefolio would go like this: Defender, PunchOut, Tetris, Duke Nukem, Halo I, Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Skyrim and MASS EFFECT I, II and III. Nothing has kept my attention longer than Knights of the Old Republic I, until Mass Effect came along. Kudos to Bioware for making a game that allows women to be a female hero... and not just any hero, an interesting one with a complex personality and kickassery. The overarching story of Mass Effect is comparable to a best selling novel. I can't wait to see what Bioware does next!

  7. What a list, Jen! I kind of wish I'd played more as a kid, but I'm not sure I'd have been a good gamer. I either get fully sucked into games, (i.e., end up playing for like 8 hours straight) or get bored quickly.

And I totally agree about FemShep and the storyline. It's all just so great.
