To Facebook? Or not to Facebook ...

Tuesday, November 25

At some point along the way with my previous blog, I started a Facebook page. It seemed to be "the thing to do" at that point in time, and I had high hopes that it would become something additional to the blog, rather than just a link dump of every post. The fact that I, personally, don't really use Facebook often—plus the fact that Facebook's algorithms for how often someone sees a post are weird and unhelpful—kind of hindered those hopes.

I haven't closed down the C&CC FB page, and I could change it to a page for ANW, but ... do I need to? Do I want to?

Some pros:

  • It's another way to promote the page.
  • It would give me an opportunity to connect with you guys more than just here on the blog/in the comments.
  • I could share links (particularly of the Nerd News variety) in a more timely manner.

Some cons:
  • I don't use FB much, so I might forget that I needed to share things (i.e., it would become just another blog post link dump).
  • I don't know how many people would actually see the things I posted.

What do y'all think? If you're someone who "likes" blog FB pages, what do you like about them? If you're not, why not? I'd love to hear what you think.

  1. I say don't bother. I think with awesome Disqus here, you're able to connect with your readers. And, like you said, you don't use Facebook much yourself and it's become just a link-dump. Personally, I just don't think blogs need Facebook pages. When it comes to social media, I say keep it simple. Not everything has to be represented on every platform.
But that's just my opinion. :)

  2. My opinion is don't bother if you aren't really feeling a need. I hardly use my personal FB anymore, and I often forget that blogs have FB pages. I definitely prefer other platforms!

  3. I definitely prefer other platforms than Facebook. I agree with previous comments - disqus is a great way of connecting with readers.

  4. I don't really use FB for my blog, though I have it just so no one else swoops in. Some days I get grand hopes of what I might be able to use it for, but I never remember to update it and frankly, am at the point where I don't bother.

  5. Hi Mandy, lately I read a very good article about how stupid is Facebook (). It made me realize that you need to put so much effort (and money!) to actually reach someone from your page and, honestly, I don't feel it worth it. We should be able to be followed by the people who liked our pages without paying! I have a page for my blog both on Facebook and Google+, but I don't use them, I just share the links to my articles there through Buffer while I'm sharing on Twitter, but nobody likes them or interact there, so I could close them tomorrow and nobody would notice it. My Fb page is just a placeholder, nothing more.

  6. Not necessary. I like Facebook, from an "it's fun to play with" perspective (I don't have a personal FB page, except to admin a business FB page. I do not like FB for personal use). But, it's not necessary. I don't think. For me? I subscribe via Bloglovin', so you're always going to have me reading your posts (LIKE IT OR NOT, I'M STALKING YOU).

    ...I like Twitter.... :)

  7. I see that a lot of people are against it, but i mean... for me... it reminds me to look at the posts. sometimes I don't remember that it's Wednesday and look at their news and then I'll see it on Facebook and I'm like oh yeah! also I didn't know that your new blog has started up and that this is even happening until a few seconds ago when I .... saw the post on Facebook! (and this is coming from one of your long time followers!) just something to think about

  9. When I was planning the switch, I saved A Nerdy World on FB. I realized later that I could have just changed the C&CC one so that no one would have to re-like something, but I can likely still do that. I don't think it hurts to have grabbed it, like you said. But, also like you said, I don't remember to update it. We shall see ...

  10. Hi Alice! Thanks for that link. That was a really interesting read. And thanks for the personal info—it's good to see what others are doing (and makes me feel better to see that I'm not the only one who lets these things languish at times).

  11. I was on Facebook more when I had to admin a business page, but I rarely go on it now. It seems like I never really see what I am interested in seeing, which I think—according to the article Alice linked to—is even worse for business/blog pages. It's frustrating!

I do share my posts on Twitter, too, so there's that. I definitely use it for conversing more than FB.

Oh, and I'm glad to have you as a stalker! Just, you know, keep it healthy. ;)

  12. Good counterpoint, for sure. I might just keep posting from here to there, just as another way to remind people? And I'm glad you saw the reminder post! I would hate to not have you as a reader on the new site. <3
