Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
★★★★½

Quill has dad issues
Save the galaxy again
All heart eyes for Groot

Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy is probably my second favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe movie (after The Avengers), so to say that I was excited about this sequel is a bit of an understatement. I love pretty much everything about this franchise, from the music to the characters to the colors that saturate pretty much every scene. And, for the most part, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 didn't let me down.

It was great being able to jump right in with the Guardians crew (as much as I enjoyed watching them come together in the first movie), and everyone played their roles to a T. Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill/Star-Lord's mix of swagger and insecurity so well, and Dave Bautista's Drax never fails to make me laugh, hard. Rocket was snarky and endearing, in equal parts, and I love how I tend to forget that he's voiced by Bradley Cooper, if that makes sense? (How about this: The character is so well done, and feels so "realistic," that it's easy for me to separate the voice actor from the role.)

Zoe Saldana's Gamora was a little underused, but her scenes with Karen Gillen's Nebula were some of the most powerful of the movie. There was an overarching theme of family, whether blood or found, in this film, which gave it a lot of heart. And Michael Rooker's Yondu really made some huge strides in character growth. The smattering of cameo appearances by celebrities were also delightful, but I won't spoil who all appeared.

Unsurprisingly, Baby Groot (Toddler Groot?) stole the show. From his opening credits dance party to his post-credits scene, everything he did was either adorable, hilarious, or a combination of the two.

The plot of this movie was the only thing that I felt was a little lacking. Although the story line surrounding Ego was interesting, and was a good story on its own, the movie felt overly "bridgy," like it was there to get us from GotG to Infinity War without making too much of an impact. That said, I loved it. It made me laugh, it made me tear up, and it made me want to listen to the soundtrack on repeat. (To be honest, however, the soundtrack of the first movie was better, too.) If that's not a good time at the movies, I don't want to know what is.

Nerd News | BABY GROOT

Monday, December 5

OK, yes. We've seen Baby Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teaser, but there's so much more of his adorable self in the longer trailer that dropped over the weekend!

I CAN'T DEAL. I've watched it at least five times now.

Question: Do y'all think they (meaning the movie's crew) planned to call Baby Groot Baby Groot before everyone (meaning the world) started calling him that? Not that it matters, but I kind of love the idea that fans inspired the choice.

Also of note:
  • A trailer for the live-action Beauty and the Beast released mid-November, and it looks fantastic. Beauty and the Beast was my fave animated Disney movie growing up, so I'm really hoping this new version does it justice.
  • Here's a teaser trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a new movie (based on a French graphic novel) from The Fifth Element director Luc Besson.
  • And a trailer for Kong: Skull Island, which looks way more comedic than I expected.
  • If you're super excited for Mass Effect: Andromeda, like I am, you might want to check out this gameplay trailer.1
  • FINALLY someone's realized the merchandising potential of creating actual—not "inspired by, not vaguely reminiscent of—jackets like those in the movies *cough*still waiting for a Pacific Rim bomber *cough*: Columbia is releasing a line of Rogue One jackets.2

Nerd News | Comic Con round-up

Tuesday, July 26

If you pay attention to the nerdy side of the Internet—which, I'm assuming, most of you do—you know that this past weekend/half of last week was Comic Con in San Diego. It is a time of huge reveals, massive crowds, and lines that go on for days, and it's one of the most amazing experiences I've ever been a part of. (We went a few times a few years ago; sadly, we haven't been in much too long.)

While being awesome, the event can also be utterly overwhelming, particularly if you try to follow every newsy bit that's announced. That said, I'm very thankful for the news outlets that do cover everything (or almost everything), because it makes me feel a little less like I've missed out.

I'm highlighting a few of my favorite things from the event below, but do let me know if I missed any of your faves in the comments!

Wonder Woman

This looks really, really, really good.

Star Trek: Discovery

As much as I enjoy the movies, I'm super excited that Star Trek's going to be back on the small screen. More details here.

Doctor Strange

This looks very Inceptiony. And .. that's basically the extent of my knowledge about this, haha. Other than that I'm excited Benedict's joined the Marvel 'verse. More details here.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

It's not exactly new Harry Potter, but it's close enough (and looks fun enough) for me. More details here.

American Gods

I read this book many years (and many books) ago, so I barely remember the plot. But I do remember loving it, and Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite people, so I'm here for this for sure. More details here.

Sherlock

The three words revealed about the show's fourth season? "Thatcher, Smith and Sherrinford." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ More details here.

SQUEE! | Hot Toys Little Groot

Wednesday, December 17

I got an email earlier today that set my nerd heart a'racin':

I fell madly in love with Baby Groot earlier this year when we met during Guardians of the Galaxy. I mean, how could you not?!

#Sorrynotsorry for the gratuitous Baby Groot scene.

I have a Baby Groot pin on my backpack. A still from the Baby Groot scene (see above) is the wallpaper of my large monitor at work. I plan on picking up the Baby Groot POP! vinyl figure a.s.a.p. (if I don't get it for Christmas). So you know I'm lusting after this guy hardcore.

Hot Toys is known for their mind-bogglingly detailed and accurate action figures (see: Loki and Agent Coulson), and this guy is no exception. Little Groot is fully poseable and comes with three different adorable faces.

I haven't pulled the plug on the pre-order yet, however. This figure is extremely cheap ($44.99+shipping) when compared to the larger sixth-scale action figures (which sell for $200+), but it's so, so tiny (4.75 in/12 cm). I'll have to sleep on it.

But if you're more sure than I, you can place your pre-order here.
